This totally uninhabited atoll sits in the middle of the East China Sea about 30 minutes south of Naha. The only other objects in the water around Rukan are FADs (Fish Aggregate Devices) - buoys used by fishermen. The sheer stand alone complex of this atoll is breathtaking.
There are basically only 2 dive sites on Rukan - you can either anchor up in the shallow reef area or you can drift along what's called Rukan Drop.
Rukan Drop goes is a wall dive that surrounds the east, west, and south sides. The wall begins at the surface and shoots straight down at 90 degrees to a max depth of who knows how deep. It's just endless. Many large sea fans, schools of tuna, blue fussilers, and small critters can be found when diving here.
Check the map for a better idea of what lies below at Rukan Drop.
