Motobu is located in the northern area of Okinawa - not too far from the world famous Chura Umi Aquarium. The drive up the coast is very scenic - lots of interesting rocks out in the middle of the ocean and such. It doesn't get much more laid back than the lifestyle enjoyed by the Motobu area locals - "island time" runs rampant and things are done at one's own pace.
Diving points in the Motobu Area include boat accessible sites on Minna and Sesoko Islands, and beach diving at such places like Gorilla Chop. One look at the large rock on the beach and divers will understand how this site got its name. Because this point is located in a wind protected bay, we use this site often when the waves and wind are not cooperating with us.
Underwater, the main feature of Gorilla Chop is the pure white sand that makes up the sea floor. Add in some clear blue water and the color contrast is breathtaking! In the sand there are many small creatures for keen eyed divers to find. Rocks and coral reefs are sprinkled about, making great hiding places for lion fish, schools of goat fish, coral cods, and other tropical reef dwellers.
